Forms for postgraduate research students
These are the forms you will need if you wish to request a change of circumstance during your postgraduate research programme.
PGRs must be aware of the University PGR Code of Practice for policies and procedures relating to changes to degrees, interruptions, supervision and progress before submitting a request.
Please ensure you consider any implications for funding or visas as a result of any change request. Please contact the Doctoral Academy for advice prior to submission if required by emailing FBMH.doctoralacademy.support@manchester.ac.uk.
All change of circumstances requests will require the approval of the Supervisor and Senior Division Tutor before submission. Some requests will be passed to the Faculty Research Degrees Panel for review/approval.
Extension to programme requests are only to request further time to undertake research. PGRs will be contacted by the Doctoral Academy when approaching their programme end date to confirm whether they wish to enter the submission pending period (if applicable).
PGRs on 1-year, 2-year, 3-year or 3.5-year programmes are entitled to enter a period of submission pending for writing and finalising their thesis (for funded PGRs this does not include continued stipend payments).
If you have mitigating circumstances and need to apply for an extension to your programme, you will need to refer to the Change of Circumstances Policy and the associated Extensions Procedure for Postgraduate Research Students. Extensions will be unfunded, unless your funder or supervisor has specific funding available that may be applied. Interruption from programme remains an important route for PGRs, where personal or health-related circumstances are significantly impacting on your ability to study. Please seek advice from your Supervisors, Divisional PGR Tutor or the Doctoral Academy.

All applications for external study (i.e. fieldwork, placements, overseas institutional visits etc.) that do not form a pre-determined part of your programme (examples of pre-determined would be BBSRC PIPS, split-site PhD, dual award PhD etc.) must now be submitted via My Placement. If you are unsure if you need to submit an external study application through My Placement please contact FBMH.doctoralacademy.support@manchester.ac.uk confirming the purpose of the study arrangement so we can advise further.
